Escape games are pure “aha!” — that little jolt of triumph when a clue finally clicks and a locked door swings open. But they can also be maddening when you’re stuck, clicking hopelessly at the same three objects. The secret is that escape games follow a logic, and once you learn how to approach them methodically, you’ll get stuck far less often. Here’s how to escape almost any room, from Escape Mystery Room to Lab Escape Online.
1. Search everything, thoroughly
Before you try to solve anything, explore the whole scene. Click every drawer, lift every cushion, check behind every picture. Escape games hide clues and items in plain sight, and you can’t solve a puzzle you haven’t found the pieces for. Be systematic — sweep the room left to right so you don’t miss a corner.
2. Pick up (almost) everything
If you can take an object, take it. That odd key, coin, or scrap of paper you can’t use yet almost always fits a lock a few steps later. A full inventory is your toolkit — hoard first, use later.
3. Note anything you can’t use yet
Escape games are full of clues that only make sense later: a sequence of colours, a set of numbers, a strange symbol. When you find something puzzling that you can’t act on, mentally file it (or jot it down). Nine times out of ten, you’ll later find the lock it belongs to.
4. Connect clues to locks
Most escape rooms are a series of small locks — a code here, a matching puzzle there. When you hit a locked box needing a four-digit code, ask yourself: have I seen four numbers anywhere? Escape games are really an exercise in matching the clue you found to the lock it opens.
5. When stuck, revisit everything
Truly stuck? Go back over the whole room with your current inventory. An item or clue you couldn’t use ten minutes ago may now make perfect sense. The room hasn’t changed — but what you know has.
6. Think laterally
If pure logic isn’t cracking it, get creative. Combine two items in your inventory. Use an object somewhere unexpected. Escape games love a bit of lateral thinking, and the solution is often more playful than you’d assume.
